One of Detroit’s Greatest Assets!
Who knew when I asked Anita Baker if she’d come in to help me give away tickets to her benefit show at the Motor City Casino Hotel, she’d gladly agree. I mean, she IS Anita Baker. Anita was at the station to chat it up with Alexander Zonjic (you must check out the video on the home page!) when I asked her–half joking–if she would help me give out tickets to her benefit for the Sphinx Organization. The charity, which she is giving 100% of the proceeds to, benefits African American and Latino musicians in classical music studies. Anita stepped gracefully into my studio, asked for the 9th caller, then answered the phone and awarded the winner, not only tickets, but backstage passes! It was so cool and I’m sure the gentleman who won and his guest will have the time of their lives! I couldn’t thank Anita enough. She said she was glad to and that she’d just be at home in her kitchen if she was not here. Many of you probably know Anita and how down to earth she is. I’ve only met her a couple of times, but she’s always struck me as a real sweetheart. Of course, I’ve admired her from afar…her incredible talent and voice-yes…but also the commitment to her family. She’s made no bones about putting her kids first. She is also so loyal to the city of Detroit. She is one of our greatest assets in so many ways. Let’s hear it for Anita Baker!
